Ingredients

1
onion, finely chopped
4
garlic cloves, chopped
2 tbsp
olive oil
30 ml
28 oz
1 can crushed tomatoes
796 ml
¼ cup
basil leaves, finely chopped, plus more for serving
10 g
½ cup
milk
125 ml
1 cup
crispy rice cereal
30 g
1 lb
lean ground meat (pork, beef or veal)
450 g
1 cup
ricotta cheese
250 ml

Directions

Step 1
In a pot over medium-high heat, soften half of the onion and half of the garlic in the oil. Add the tomatoes. Bring to a boil. Simmer for 10 minutes, stirring a few times. Season with salt and pepper. Add the basil and mix well. Set aside and keep warm.
Step 2
Meanwhile, in a bowl, combine the milk and cereal with the remaining onion and garlic. Let sit for 5 minutes. Add the ground meat and ricotta. Season with salt and pepper. Mix well.
Step 3
Using a 3-tbsp (45 ml) ice cream scoop, shape the meat mixture into balls. Finish rolling the meatballs with lightly oiled hands.
Step 4
Spread the meatballs out in the basket of an air fryer lined with parchment paper. Bake for 15 minutes at 400°F (200°C) or until cooked through.
Step 5
Spread some of the tomato sauce out in a large serving dish. Top with the meatballs and cover with the remaining sauce. Garnish with basil. Serve with rice and a green vegetable, if desired.
