- Strawberries
Preheat the grill, setting the burners to medium (see note).
- Step 2
- In a bowl, combine all of the ingredients just until the sugar has dissolved. Spread the mixture out in an 8-inch (20 cm) square foil dish. Set aside.

- Cake
In another bowl, combine the flour, baking powder and salt.
- Step 4
- In a third bowl, whisk the sugar, oil and egg with an electric mixer. With the machine running on low speed, stir in the dry ingredients alternating with the milk.

- Spread the batter over the strawberries. Place the foil dish on the grill. Close the lid and cook for 35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the centre of the cake comes out clean. Let cool.
- Step 6
- Serve the cooled cake with vanilla ice cream, if desired.
Tips
To prepare the cake in the oven: with the rack in the middle position, preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Continue the recipe from step 2.
