Slice bread into 5 rows lengthwise and crosswise, leaving bottom crust intact (about 1 cm or ⅟₂ in. from bottom).

Tuck cheese into each slit and push gently towards the bottom of loaf. Fill with cheese to taste.

Brush loaf with melted butter and sprinkle with salt, if desired.

Wrap loaf in aluminum foil and bake for 15 minutes. Unwrap and bake for another 15 minutes. To serve: Guests can tear off pieces of bread by hand or with a fork.
